This is an introductory survey of U.S. history from Spanish settlement to the Civil War. Major topics include the origins, evolution, and importance of chattel slavery; the political significance of religion in everyday life; the economic, cultural, and political underpinnings of the independence movement; and the wrenching upheavals that ended in the bloodiest conflict in United States history.
